Imiquad Cream contains 5% Imiquimod, an immune response modifier used topically to treat skin conditions like genital warts, actinic keratosis, and superficial basal cell carcinoma. It boosts the body’s natural defenses to fight abnormal skin growths.
Description
Imiquad Cream (Imiquimod 5%) is a prescription topical immune response modifier used to treat external genital and perianal warts, actinic keratosis (AK), and superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC). It works by stimulating the body’s innate immune system to attack and eliminate abnormal skin cells and virus-infected tissue.
Unlike direct antiviral or anticancer agents, Imiquimod boosts the body’s natural immunity by inducing cytokine production, including interferon-alpha. This makes it especially useful in immunocompromised cases or where surgical options are limited.
Key Indications:
- External genital and perianal warts caused by HPV
- Actinic keratosis (precancerous sun spots)
- Superficial basal cell carcinoma (small surface skin cancers)
How to Use:
- Apply a thin layer to the affected area before bedtime, 3 times a week (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
- Wash off with mild soap and water after 6–10 hours
- Do not occlude or bandage the treated area
Precautions:
- Do not apply to broken or ulcerated skin unless advised
- May cause local redness, flaking, burning, or ulceration
- Discontinue temporarily if severe local reaction occurs
- Use sunscreen or UV Doux SPF 50 to avoid photosensitivity
Clinical Information:
Studies have shown Imiquimod’s success in clearing genital warts in over 50% of users within 8–12 weeks. It’s also a preferred non-invasive treatment option for small skin cancers, especially when surgery isn’t suitable (source).
